OK, i've come across this show on PBS and i cannot stop watching. I'm so tired, and half asleep, but i must see what the hell is going on with these people in upstate NY!
It's all about people who are totally obsessed with growing enormous pumpkins, like 1000-1400 pound pumpkins! They inject them with milk (through an actual IV), cover it with blankets at night, and even talk about how if one of thier giant pumpkins dies, they grieve the loss as that of a child.
They trade seeds at the end of the season, like little genetic scientists. They put socks and stockings on the flowering parts so they don't accidentally get cross pollinated by a bee (just doing his job i might ad...)
They log on to the internet onto something they refer to as "the pumpkin chat line" for advice on how to keep pests away. One lady laid a ring of mousetraps 3 rows deep surrounding her pumpkin like a castle wall. Another guy installed an electric fence to keep out any rodents or other animals.
Because there is sabotage from other growers, ie; spraying weed killer on another farmer's pumpkin patch in the dark of night,
One man even admitted to not going on vacation, and NOT attending his children's recitals and sports events, as he HAD to be in the garden tending to his pumpkin patch...
people never cease to amaze me.
